Which protection does each device provide?
An RCCB detects residual current; it does not provide integral overload or short-circuit protection. An RCBO combines residual-current and overcurrent protection in one device. Choose against the circuit design, fault level, load and distribution-board compatibility. An equal ampere rating alone does not make two devices interchangeable.
For a purchase enquiry, identify whether you need a replacement reference or a newly specified protective device. Send the circuit schedule and approved make. The electrical designer should confirm the protection arrangement before an alternative is ordered; this guide is a procurement checklist, not an installation procedure.
RCCB and RCBO comparison
Use the manufacturer's datasheet for the exact reference. The abbreviated name describes the protection functions, but it does not establish the device's residual-current type, pole arrangement, dimensions or coordination with other equipment.
Purchase check | RCCB | RCBO |
|---|---|---|
Residual-current protection | Provided, according to the specified device type | Provided, according to the specified device type |
Overload and short-circuit protection | Requires a suitable separate overcurrent protection arrangement | Integral overcurrent function; verify the complete device ratings |
Circuit arrangement | May protect a group of outgoing circuits in a designed arrangement | Can provide combined protection for an individual circuit |
Quotation inputs | Rated current, residual sensitivity/type, poles and coordinated protection | Those inputs plus overcurrent characteristic and breaking capacity |
Replacement compatibility | Check series, terminals, busbar and enclosure | Check those details plus neutral arrangement and module width |
Amperes and milliamperes answer different questions
Rated current in amperes and residual operating current in milliamperes are separate specifications. Copy both from the approved schedule or existing reference. A larger current rating does not explain the residual-current response; matching only the sensitivity leaves the continuous-current and fault-protection questions unanswered.
Residual-current Types AC, A, F and B describe different detection capabilities. Loads with power electronics may require a particular type under their manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume a device is suitable for a drive, UPS or other electronic load because its current rating and pole count match. Ask the designer to confirm the required type, selectivity and any time-delay requirements.
Check the complete replacement reference
Photograph the device marking and distribution-board identification without removing protective covers. Include the catalogue number and a photo that shows the existing terminal and mounting arrangement. A visually similar device can have a different residual-current type, breaking capacity or neutral connection.
List any linked auxiliaries or accessories separately. State whether a manufacturer's coordinated assembly or approved-make restriction applies. An alternative quotation should identify differences explicitly so the responsible engineer can review them; a supplier's offer should not silently substitute a different protection function.
- Supply voltage and frequency; single-phase or three-phase arrangement
- Pole configuration, including how the neutral is switched or connected
- Rated current and residual-current sensitivity/type
- Required overcurrent characteristic and fault rating where applicable
- Board make, device series, module width and busbar compatibility
- Quantity, approved alternatives, delivery postcode and documentation
Compare the installed scope, then request a quote
An RCCB-only unit price and an RCBO unit price describe different functions. For a meaningful comparison, list the associated overcurrent devices, accessories and board requirements in the same quotation schedule. Also confirm whether the quote covers supply only or a separately agreed panel assembly.
Tirupati Power Enterprises handles electrical protection enquiries from Kolkata. Send the approved schedule or replacement references with quantities and delivery details. Availability, exact model, technical compliance and lead time are confirmed against the requirement; this guide does not establish stock or an authorised-dealer relationship.

Frequently asked questions
Does an RCCB trip on overload?
An RCCB has no integral overload or short-circuit protection. The circuit needs a suitable coordinated overcurrent protection arrangement. Check the exact manufacturer's instructions and approved design.
Can an RCBO replace an RCCB directly?
Do not assume a direct replacement. Verify circuit arrangement, protection ratings, residual-current type, pole and neutral configuration, board compatibility and coordination with the responsible electrical designer.
What should I send for an RCCB or RCBO quotation?
Send the full reference or approved specification, current rating, residual sensitivity and type, poles, voltage, required fault rating, quantity and delivery postcode. Add the distribution-board make and any accessories.
Specify your requirement
