Application & selection
An automatic power factor correction (APFC) panel switches capacitor stages to follow a changing reactive-power demand. Conventional contactor switching suits slower load changes; thyristor switching is used where the demand changes rapidly. The bank and its protection must be selected after reviewing the load profile and harmonics.

The need for detuning depends on harmonics and resonance risk in the installation. A measured harmonic assessment and engineering review are needed before selecting the capacitor bank.
