DOL starter: the short answer
A DOL starter connects a motor to its full supply voltage through a switching and control arrangement. Its contactor, overload protection and control circuit must suit the motor and installation. It does not provide the voltage ramp or speed control of a soft starter or VFD.
Tirupati Power Enterprises supplies motor starters from Kolkata. This page describes a product type, not a stocked model or a fixed horsepower range. Make, series, configuration, documents, availability and commercial terms are confirmed in the quotation.
Specify the starter from the motor and circuit
A motor power rating helps identify the requirement, but nameplate current and operating conditions determine the protection and switching selection. Give the actual starting duty, starts per hour, load and supply constraints; a starter suitable for an occasional pump start may not suit repeated cycling.
Selection input | What to confirm |
|---|---|
Motor supply and nameplate | Phases, voltage, frequency, rated current and kW/HP |
Switching duty | Contactor utilisation category and manufacturer motor-duty selection |
Control supply | Coil/control voltage and AC or DC; confirm control transformer requirement |
Overload protection | Relay range, class and reset arrangement for the approved design |
Short-circuit coordination | Upstream fuse/breaker and the tested manufacturer combination |
Enclosure | Mounting, ingress protection, cable entries and ambient conditions |
Distinguish the assembled starter from its components
A contactor alone is not a complete DOL starter. A quotation may cover an enclosed assembly, an open component set or individual replacement parts. Check whether overload protection, start/stop controls, enclosure and any isolating or short-circuit protective device are included.
Do not treat an overload relay as a substitute for short-circuit protection. The complete circuit and coordination arrangement belong to the responsible electrical designer. Installation, isolation, settings and commissioning must follow the approved drawings and manufacturer instructions.
Replacement and quotation checklist
For replacement, send the starter and motor nameplate photographs, exact part reference, coil marking, relay range, enclosure dimensions and symptoms. A visually similar enclosure does not establish interchangeability.
- Motor nameplate and application/load
- Required make or exact replacement reference
- Control voltage, relay range and reset preference
- Mounting, location, entries and required protection
- Quantity, destination, documentation and delivery requirement

Questions about DOL Motor Starters
Can I buy a DOL starter using only the motor HP?
Provide the motor nameplate current and voltage as well as HP/kW. Coil voltage, overload range, starting duty, enclosure and upstream protection also need confirmation.
Is the contactor coil voltage the same as the motor supply?
Not necessarily. The control supply may differ from the motor line supply. Read the existing coil marking and approved drawing before ordering.
Does every enclosed starter include short-circuit protection?
No. Confirm the contents of the quoted assembly and its upstream protective-device requirements. An overload relay does not automatically provide short-circuit protection.
